EDIT: this is now my most Favorited deviation. thanks people!

Waiting eagerly for Portal 2. in the meantime i decided to draw Chell in her new outfit. (Love the new boots she's got.)
which i shall now commentate on.

Chell's wardrobe evolution, in the light of how female characters are often represented in games, was interesting to me. Given how female characters, while they may play a main roles, are often sexualized since the majority of players are males. and being a chauvinistic pig, i don't mind that much.

Only company i've seen that really doesn't do that is Valve, Alyx Vance from half life is the first example that comes to mind. she's strong, capable, attractive, and not flaunting it.but it comes across anyway.

Following Portal, we start off with Chell in an orange jumpsuit as a prisoner of the enrichment center. the concept art we have seen since began with her in a teal full body one piece, very "lab rattish" get up, which was unflattering, but it worked fine. she's there to run tests after all.

then we get the newest art on the cover of a french gaming magazine, and Chells design has taken another turn. The orange jumpsuit is still there but has been stropped down to and tied around the waist. the teal lab suit seems to be under the jumpsuit, and she's now sporting a white tank top, presumably given to her for participating in enrichment center activity's.

also her face has changed about, now looking more like the attractive, multi ethical mash up that we see in Angelina Joile, Disney's Pocahontas, and Janis from the Muppets.

In my opinion the new look works for the new game. She's busting out of the prison clothes and looks ready to shove an orphans shoe so far up GLaDOS's exhaust port that she'll be trying to remove the rubber for weeks.

At the same time it also looks like Valve may be attempting to engage in some fan servicing of Chell. Bumping up her looks, even though we rarely see her, makes for a more...enjoyable game. It also helps push the fandom along. But Valve really didn't go that far with her. she's not bulging out of her top or sporting one layer short tops. she's still modestly portrayed, and the outfit is practical to the dangers of the environment.

but either way this turns and either side you sit on, we'll just have to wait and see what happens to our heroine. I'm looking forward to an engaging and challenging game.

oh...right...the crowbar she's holding...call it a hunch about episode 3.

This may sound odd, but I love the look in her eyes.
